Command a King's Ship (Richard Bolitho #8)
I am a naval-holic, as I prefer to think. Alexander Kent had done a great job and this seems to be a great series for me. Bolitho is now my new marine hero!
I am only partially through the Bolitho series and this is the best one yet. The story telling is superb and vivid (I kept picturing the smoke of a broadside and the bellowing sails of a ship at sea.) The plot is more advanced then some of the previous Bolitho novels since the Undine's mission is just as much of politics and espionage, as it is naval battles and hand-to-hand combat. The characters are well developed and Kent does a good job at showing Bolitho's occasional irritation but also
This novel is set in 1784, in the interim period between the end of the American Revolution and the beginning of Britain's long running conflict with Republican and Napoleonic France. Captain Bolitho is called to take command of HMS Undine, a frigate, and go on a mission that will lead him to Madras and then Borneo beyond. He is to accompany a Spanish frigate. However, en route to Madras, the Spanish ship gets into conflict with an unknown sloop and is led onto shoals off the coast of Africa,
This is the only book of his I've read, but works brilliantly as a stand-alone. Will certainly seek out more!
Will I ever get Alexander Kent and Captain Bolitho out of my system...hope not. Can literally smell the sea with every page and the sound of his boots checking on the watchmen. I do sneak away now and then to read my other desirables Patterson and Grisham but cant wait to get back to the sea with the great Alex Andre Kent.
Exhilarating!

Spithead, 1784. His Majesty's Frigate, Undine, sets sail for India and the seas beyond. Europe may be at peace—but in colonial waters the promises of statesmen count for little and the bloody struggle for supremacy still goes on.Define Of Books Command a King's Ship (Richard Bolitho #8)

WHO typeset this thing?Another solid Bolitho adventure RUINED by hyphenated words EVERYWHERE. While I enjoyed the story, hyphenated words all over the place makes me rate this three stars.
