On Self-Denial
"The old saying is true, 'There is a world of iniquity treasured up in the human heart.' Nor can you find any other remedy for this than to deny yourself, renounce your own reason, and direct your whole mind to the pursuit of those things that the Lord requires of you and that you are to seek only because they are pleasing to him."
Not what I want to read right now, but okay, I guess. Also, Calvin seems a lot more calm about theology and more rational about theology than say people these days.
John Calvin (10 July 1509 27 May 1564), né Jehan Cauvin, re-translated from Latin Iohannes Calvinus into Jean Calvin in modern French, was an influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation. Chronicle Supposing Books On Self-Denial
Not really a book at all, just a 24-page booklet that I believe is excerpted from The Institutes; but for all its brevity it's one of the best things I've read all year (and I've read some pretty good books). Calvin tackles the concept of self-denial/cross-bearing as it pertains to our relationship with Christ, our relationships with people, our sanctification, trials and difficulties, and more. I love his simple, honest, concise way of communicating truth. He was so unapologetically straightforward, and yet so incredibly gracious. Makes me really want to tackle The Institutes in full."The old saying is true, 'There is a world of iniquity treasured up in the human heart.' Nor can you find any other remedy for this than to deny yourself, renounce your own reason, and direct your whole mind to the pursuit of those things that the Lord requires of you and that you are to seek only because they are pleasing to him."
