While a man is living he is not conscious of his own life; it becomes audible to him, like a sound, after the lapse of time.

I didn't expect to like this book as much since it's been so many years since I was first knocked out by Dostoevsky's story "19th Century Gentleman" and Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and the notion of the alienated man, which became so important to my thinking as a young artist. I thought this would not resonate in the same way for me, some 40 years later. Although written in 1850, set in a different culture, having a somewhat formal lilt, it felt contemporary and insightful in its observation of
The Sorrows of Young Werther meets Notes from the Underground, unfortunately the mix is not very good. Although a short book it gets tedious at moments. Maybe it was Turgenev's intention to made the book tedious so that by the end we can feel the superflousness of the main character. Well he succeeded at making me want to throw the book.It is significant because it is the first book to develop "the superfluous man" in details however Dostoyevsky perfected it in the Notes from the Underground.
Are you feeling too happy and want to be depressed for a change? Read this book. Or rather, listen to the audiobook narrated by Martin Geeson on Librivox, you'd be dragged into the gloomy and sad life of Tchulkaturin(I'm never going to pronounce a russian name properly :/ ).The author does a fantastic job of creating a very depressing character with a very depressing story. The character is nowhere near perfect but I couldn't help feeling pitiful towards him and his circumstances, maybe because

Chronicle Concering Books Diary of a Superfluous Man
When Turgenev published Diary of a Superfluous Man in 1850, he created one of the first literary portraits of the alienated man. Turgenev once said that there was a great deal of himself in the unsuccessful lovers who appear in his fiction. This failure, along with painful self-consciousness, is a central fact for the ailing Chulkaturin in this melancholy tale. As he reflects on his life, he tells the story of Liza, whom he loved, and a prince, whom she loved instead, and the curious turns all their lives took.Itemize Based On Books Diary of a Superfluous Man

Proffering candid thoughts of a man on the verge of his death, this book offers a chilling tale of the vacuousness of the protagonist's life and his unfulfilled longings. Turgenev writes a beautifully haunted treatise into the human soul in this narrative. While a man is living he is not conscious of his own life; it becomes audible to him, like a sound, after the lapse of time.
