Svært fengende og delvis provoserende bok. Vanskelig å avgjøre om det utrolig skjeve kvinnesynet skyldes forfatteren eller at det er bevisst tillagt karakterene. Man kan vel også påstå at den bare er et produkt av sin tid. Dette er tankevekkende, i og med at den ble utgitt mer enn 50 år etter "Et dukkehjem," og langt på vei skildrer et samfunn som fordømmer og tar liv av en kvinne som, i likhet med Nora Helmer, selv prøvde å bryte ut av et ødelagt ekteskap.
