Explanation As Books Sweep: The Story of a Girl and Her Monster
For nearly a century, Victorian London relied on "climbing boys"--orphans owned by chimney sweeps--to clean flues and protect homes from fire. The work was hard, thankless and brutally dangerous. Eleven-year-old Nan Sparrow is quite possibly the best climber who ever lived--and a girl. With her wits and will, she's managed to beat the deadly odds time and time again. But when Nan gets stuck in a deadly chimney fire, she fears her time has come. Instead, she wakes to find herself in an abandoned attic. And she is not alone. Huddled in the corner is a mysterious creature--a golem--made from ash and coal. This is the creature that saved her from the fire.
Sweep is the story of a girl and her monster. Together, these two outcasts carve out a life together--saving one another in the process.

I read this aloud with my 10 year old...and oh my goodness. What a beautiful book. It definitely lived up to the hype. The storytelling was done so well...these felt like real people, walking off the page to tell us their story. It had so many things that I love in books - Victorian London setting, children finding a magical protector, Judaism in a story NOT about the Holocaust (far rarer than you'd think), and a really nasty villain. A beautiful blend of historical fiction and fantasy, withThis was an unputdownable, devour in a day, kind of book. Nan is a chimney sweep in Victorian England. She used to be under the care of "the Sweep", but her left one night leaving behind only his hat and a butt of char. This char is magic as it always holds a bit of warmth to keep Nan from freezing on cold nights. But at some point (early in the story) it gets much more magic than that and we get to meet Charlie. This book is middle grade perfection. Absolutely shows you the world through
In which I find myself crying for all the right reasons.
I haven't read much middle grade, so when Katie and Krista picked it as the #middlegrademarch group read on bookstagram, I figured I'd give it a try. (To be perfectly honest, the cover sold me... I didn't even read the synopsis before purchasing.)The story is quick but emotional, with wonderful themes about friendship and caring for others. With a plucky, strong, smart female protagonist, it's a great story for all ages. Plus, who doesn't love a lovable monster? I'd recommend this whether you're

Borrowing from Jonathans words...Sweep is a tangled knot of fantasy and fiction. From the beautifully, unputdownable, engaging story...to the amazingly, jaw-dropping back matter, Sweep is a story that will climb into your heart and resonate for ages to come. It is filled with heart and horror, beauty and ugliness, all woven together to tell the story of a young Sweep, Anns life, set in the late 1800s of Victorian England.I cannot more highly recommend this story when it comes out in September
