Chronicle Concering Books The Growing Season
I've had this book for years and I never get tired of these poems. Carol Lynn Pearson's poetry speaks to my heart in a powerfully gentle way. This time it was "To an Aged Parent" and "Diapering at 4:00 A.M." that had the greatest meaning for me. I've been really not happy with my mother for some of her behavior on Thanksgiving Day and she has a doctor's appointment that I need to take her to tomorrow. She is far from the level of age that the father in the poem has reached, but for the last few months the role reversals have clearly begun to take place. Reading this sweet poem early this morning helped me gain a little more perspective on what will become a new role in the next few years. Tomorrow will be a little easier now. It always amazes me how treasured books quietly wait to reveal just the right words at just the right time."Diapering..." has always touched my heart. I've raised four of my own babies and taken care of many other little ones through the years. This week the little one I babysit is ill and her parents were up all night last night with her. I read this poem just before they arrived this morning. I thought of the last two stanzas: "The Lord thought it all up/ This essential intimacy/ And he called it good./ He created the heavens and the earth,/ And the seas, and the naked, needing/ Infants crying to be held./ He thought it all up,/ This clever stratagem./ And yet--/ I'll bet he smiled/ When he thought about diapering at 4:00 A.M." As I gave our little one her medicine, changed her wet clothes and diaper, cuddled her, then wrapped her in her warm blanket, I thought of this poem and the intimacy that raising a child requires. I thought of the blessing that this is. And I smiled, too.

I enjoy Carol Lynn Pearson's way with words, and the pondering her words produce in me.From http://www.clpearson.com/about_me.htmIn fourth grade, in Gusher, Utah, I won four dollars in a school district essay contest on Why We Should Eat a Better Breakfast. And yes, this morning I had a bowl of my own excellent granola, followed by a hike in the hills near my home in Walnut Creek, California. In high school I began writing in earnest. I have now in my files a folder marked Poetry,
My mother passed this book on to me a few years ago and its sat on the shelf unopened until yesterday. I read this book in one sitting, couldn't put it down! Some of my favorites from this book worth mentioning: At The Church Christmas Party, The Ninth Month, The Steward (very thought provoking), A Fascinating Study in Highs and Lows, The Honor (funny, and about men/woman in the church), and last but not least Millie's Mother's Red Dress. Can't wait to read more from Carol Lynn Pearson.
"This book is about mothers
This book was OK. I thought some poems were great and others really, really not.
I love the poetry of Carol Lynn Pearson.
