Relation Supposing Books The Gospel in a Pluralist Society

How does the gospel relate to a pluralist society? What is the Christian message in a society marked by religious pluralism, ethnic diversity, and cultural relativism? Should Christians encountering today's pluralist society concentrate on evangelism or on dialogue? How does the prevailing climate of opinion affect, perhaps infect, Christians' faith?

These kinds of questions are addressed in this noteworthy book by Lesslie Newbigin. A highly respected Christian leader and ecumenical figure, Newbigin provides a brilliant analysis of contemporary (secular, humanist, pluralist) culture and suggests how Christians can more confidently affirm their faith in such a context.

While drawing from scholars such as Michael Polanyi, Alasdair MacIntyre, Hendrikus Berkhof, Walter Wink, and Robert Wuthnow, The Gospel in a Pluralist Society is suited not only to an academic readership. This heartfelt work by a missionary pastor and preacher also offers to Christian leaders and laypeople some thoughtful, helpful, and provocative reflections.

Crit Appertaining To Books The Gospel in a Pluralist Society
Essential book for anyone doing ministry/missions in this era. Insightful and practical. Ahead of its time. Dont depend on those shaped by Newbigin, read this primary source for yourself.

This review was first published in Regent College's website: https://marketplace.regent-college.ed...No doubt pluralism is a popular buzzword for our generation. Through this book, Newbigin pointed out just how pluralistic our society is, and what role the gospel and its believers should play within such an environment. Originating from a series of lectures Newbigin gave at Glasgow University in 1988, this book drew extensively from his personal experience as a pastor and a missionary, alongside

This is an essential text for the Church. The Church in America is just starting to realize that we are no longer in Christendom. Some have realized this and have started reading Newbigin and talking about missional churches, but few have actually tried to take these insights have Newbigin and live them out. Newbigin charts a good path for us Western Christians to deal with the current time and remain faithful to God's purposes. Can't recommend this book enough.

As has been noted, albeit pejoratively, in other reviews, this is not a comprehensive treatise of novel ideas, but rather the compendium of numerous streams of thought by a thinker who was writing in the middle of their convergence. We must be careful not to dismiss his work as trivial or pedantic from our modern perspective when many of these threads were still nascent in Newbiggin's England. This book has myriad important chapters and makes myriad important points. I would highly recommend it.

Currently re-reading. Has changed the way I understand faith and knowledge.

Newbigin's insights into the challenges of modern western culture are invaluable, as are his insights on how to bring to bear the gospel in the pluralistic society we live in. Great words of exhortation to the church.

Interesting book. I believe readers prior expectations determine whether they will have feasted or left the restaurant still hungry when they finish Newbigin's work. At the very least, it provides fertile ground for discussion. For readers looking for a Christian manifestoa rhetorical, defining call to gospel allegiance with a deeper understanding of the gospel mission and its juxtaposition with culture, then Newbigins book is ideal. However, if the reader is expecting a practical how-to for
